Step-by-Step Guide

How to Get Rid of a Wasp Nest Safely

A safety-first, 5-step guide from a licensed Hertfordshire pest controller. Most wasp nests are best treated by a professional — here is how to decide and what to expect either way.

Allergy warning: if you, or anyone in the household, has a known wasp allergy, do NOT attempt DIY removal. Call a professional or, in an emergency, call 999.

Step 1 — Confirm it is a wasp nest, not bees

Bees and wasps are treated completely differently. Bees are protected and we never treat them. Wasps are smooth-bodied, shiny, and bright yellow-and-black; bees are hairy and matt. If you are unsure, send us a photo before doing anything — see the full species guide.

Step 2 — Assess location, size, and access

From a safe distance (at least 5 metres), note the location, approximate size, and how busy the entrance is. The riskiest locations are lofts, wall cavities, chimneys, and soffits — these almost always need professional treatment.

Step 3 — Decide: DIY or professional

DIY may be reasonable for a small (under tennis-ball-sized), exposed early-season nest in a low-traffic outdoor location. Always call a professional for anything in a building cavity, anything above head height, anything larger than a tennis ball, or if anyone in the household has an allergy. See can I remove a wasp nest myself for the full breakdown.

Step 4 — Treat the nest

A professional treatment uses a pyrethroid dust applied directly at the nest entrance. Returning workers track the insecticide back inside, killing the queen and larvae within hours. The whole visit usually takes 15–30 minutes. If you DIY with a consumer aerosol, treat at dusk when wasps are inside, spray from a safe distance, and leave the area immediately.

Step 5 — Confirm the nest is dead

Activity should drop sharply within 24 hours and stop completely within 48–72 hours. If wasps are still actively coming and going after a week, the treatment did not reach the queen — call your pest controller back. Our jobs include a free revisit if any activity remains after 7 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to remove a wasp nest yourself?+
Small early-season nests in accessible, open locations can sometimes be treated with a consumer aerosol from a safe distance after dusk. Anything in a loft, wall cavity, soffit, chimney, or any nest larger than a tennis ball is high-risk DIY — wasps defend the nest aggressively and stings can be severe. Anyone with a known allergy should never attempt DIY treatment.
What kills a wasp nest fastest?+
A professional pyrethroid dust applied directly to the nest entrance is by far the fastest and most reliable. Returning workers carry the insecticide into the nest, killing the queen and larvae within hours. Consumer foaming aerosols can work on small surface nests but rarely penetrate cavity nests properly.
Can I just leave a wasp nest alone?+
If the nest is in a location well away from people (a tree in a corner of a large garden, for example) you can leave it — the colony dies naturally with the first hard frost. If the nest is near a doorway, in your roof space, or in a high-traffic area, leaving it risks stings throughout summer and autumn. See our guide on what happens if you leave a wasp nest.
How much does professional wasp nest removal cost?+
Across the UK, expect £55–£120 for a standard residential nest. Our fixed price starts from £99 with same-day visits and no call-out charge. See the full cost guide for more.
